ALZ – ALZ is a common abbreviation for Alzheimer’s disease. It is a brain disorder named for German physician Alois Alzheimer, who first described it in 1906. Alzheimer’s is a progressive and fatal brain disease, that destroys brain cells, causing problems with memory, thinking and behavior severe enough to affect work, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer’s gets worse over time, and it is fatal. As many as 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and it is currently the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States. While Alzheimer’s has no current cure, there are a growing number of treatments for symptoms. These treatments combined with the right services and support, can ease the strain for families coping with this disease.
